There are many times we receive a call from a new company from the printing industry, packaging industry, textile industry or any industry requiring to begin rub testing. We usually tell them to perform a design of experiments (DOE) using the information listed below.
In the field of Quality Control and Engineering practices within a laboratory setting, rub testing is performed to test paper and other materials to withstand normal use conditions, simulating conditions subjected to. Our customers use our SUTHERLAND® 2000 Rub Tester, the leading machine in setting internal measures, based on a standard. No matter your business, quality is something we can all agree on and that’s why the standard was set. As an example, when it comes to medical and pharmaceutical labeling abrasion can happen during shipping, handling, or storage. These labels contain critical dosage, and operating information. The ASTM D5264-98 2011 standard was set by Danilee Co. LLC’s  SUTHERLAND® Rub Tester, the leading machine in setting quality standards for the industry.
The practice procedure for determining the abrasion resistance of printed materials uses the SUTHERLAND® 2000 Rub Tester equipped with full-width rubber pads for the base and weights. This practice is applicable to labels, folding cartons, corrugated boxes, inserts, circulars, and other packaging materials having applied graphics on a flat substrate.
The Sutherland Rub Test is performed by attaching a label or other substrate to the device’s base while a similar sample label or substrate is attached to a weight. The two samples are then rubbed against one another at a controlled speed for a predetermined number of cycles. Once the rubbing stops, the samples are visually inspected to see if the ink has worn off or not. This helps to determine if printing is durable enough to withstand a typical handling and transportation environment. The test is able to simulate human handling and use as well as continual use.Ensuring your labels can hold up the SUTHERLAND® Rub Test standard ensures that the important and often critical information makes it’s way to the end user and stands the test of time.
Since setting the standard in the industry we haven’t stopped our innovations.
Our SUTHERLAND DC-1212 Bottle/Can Adapter and Holding Fixture allow our customers to test labels on round or other various shapes surfaces.  Our SUTHERLAND DC-929 Bottle Cap Adapter allows testing on custom sized bottle caps to fit your product.
